PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OVERVIEW

Welcome to the Vancouver School District's
Professional Development Department

It is our goal to provide superior learning experiences for students by offering dynamic learning opportunities for teachers. In our rapidly changing world, there is a need to make significant changes within the teaching environment to help children make sense of these changes and prepare them for responsible, productive futures. Skilled, enthusiastic and well-informed, inspired teachers are key to maintaining the quality of education.

The Vancouver district remains committed to a rich and varied professional development program for teachers and other staff groups. Staff development is critical for many reasons:

  • to foster effective, learner-centered, high quality educational programs in a rapidly changing environment
  • to encourage the personal growth of individual staff members
  • to plan for continuous school and organizational growth
  • to implement new curricula developed by the Ministry of Education

Professional Development can take many forms, such as reading, studying, participating in research or study groups, attending workshops, seminars and conferences, taking courses, etc. In addition to school-based Professional Development, there is a wide selection of district and external offerings. Many are included on this website. Check back regularly for updates.
